An idea struck me recently:
Successful people derive happiness primarily from producing things people value. Normal people derive happiness primarily from consuming things produced by the successful people.
If this is true, the thought of becoming successful (or, simply, rich as in most people's definition) so that you can consume the things you dream about all the time (big house, nice cars, great food, vacation, etc) will never work out since it's a wrong mindset from the beginning.
Looking around, you'd notice that many people always think about what to consume. Their full-time work? That's a means to an end: earning their salaries to consume. Not enough cash? Credit cards come to help consuming more than you can afford.
That's probably why there's a LOT more normal people than the successful ones in this world :P
